Our board-certified cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Fariba Gharai, will perform a comprehensive physical examination and evaluate your medical history during your vein consultation. She will then determine what treatment is right for you. There are different types of injections used in sclerotherapy depending on your needs. If a vein is difficult to see from the surface of the skin, your vein surgeon can also use ultrasound guidance to visualize the vein and treat it with sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both smaller spider veins and larger varicose veins.

You will lie on a table in a comfortable position. Dr. Gharai will clean the area around the affected veins with an antiseptic solution and then inject a small amount of the sclerosing solution directly into the problematic vein using a very fine needle. You may feel a mild sensation of stinging or burning, but this should only last a few seconds. She will continue injecting the solution into each affected vein until all targeted veins have been treated. How many injections you require depends on the number and size of the concerning veins.
